The real issue with having a short-term gun-for-hire in charge of the national team is that it plays up to the idea that success for England can ONLY be measured by winning one of the tournaments that come around every two years.

The Football Association believes Tuchel will give them the best chance of doing that, so they appointed him, irrespective of his nationality.

Fair enough. No problem.

After all, one sector of English society that does believe that only victory at a World Cup or a Euros constitutes true success is us, the media.
