TMC Opposes Operation Sindoor Narrative on the Ground
The Sunday Guardian
|June 08, 2025
TMC counters BJP's Operation Sindoor narrative amid 2026 election tensions.
The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has launched a strategic campaign to counter the political advantage gained by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through Operation Sindoor, a military strike conducted on May 7, 2025, targeting terror bases in Pakistan.
With the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections looming, the TMC is working to reclaim the narrative, accusing the BJP of politicising the operation for electoral gains while highlighting the Central Government's security failures.
Operation Sindoor, the retaliatory strike following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians, destroyed nine terrorist bases and eliminated more than 100 terrorists.
The BJP has leveraged the operation to fuel nationalistic fervour, organising Tiranga Yatras in Kolkata and other towns and cities in the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have spearheaded the BJP's campaign, with Shah accusing Banerjee of opposing the operation to "appease the Muslim vote bank" during a rally in Kolkata on June 1, 2025, while linking her to the recent Murshidabad riots.
The TMC's counter-campaign focuses on three fronts.
