Leadership rifts and exits weaken Congress as BJP consolidates strength ahead of the elections in April.
The Indian National Congress’s standing in Assam appears to have hit a new low ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections, with a wave of high-profile defections and persistent internal rifts laying bare serious organisational weaknesses within the state unit.
The most recent setback came with the resignation of senior parliamentarian Pradyut Bordoloi, who has since joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
His departure has triggered further exits within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), including Nabajyoti Talukdar, a close associate of Bordoloi, who also quit the party.
