Waller's Fangirl Swings South for Memsie Stakes

MELBOURNE - Top jockey Mark Zahra has been given the call-up to ride Fangirl in the A$750,000 (S$623,000) Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1,400m), the feature of the Melbourne Racing Club's meeting at Caulfield on Aug 30.

The Chris Waller-trained mare was floated down from Sydney on Aug 23 and will head to Caulfield on Aug 26 for a familiarisation gallop.

Fangirl was scratched from the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1,400m) at Randwick on Aug 23 due to the heavy track conditions.

The race - Sydney's first elite race for the new season - was won by her stablemate Via Sistina, who led a Waller 1-2 with rising star Aeliana.

Waller said a drier track in Melbourne would be to Fangirl's advantage, despite between 8mm and 40mm of rain being forecast at Caulfield for the week.

Fangirl has been unplaced on all five attempts on heavy tracks, while she is a four-time winner from nine starts on soft going.

"She will run in the Memsie," said Waller.

"She will gallop there Tuesday to get used to the track.
