Traditional Herbal Healing in Donguibogam Village
The Straits Times
|March 11, 2025
In the county of Sancheong, along the eastern slopes of Jirisan—one of South Korea’s most sacred mountains—I spend a day in Donguibogam Village (str.sg/49j67), a theme park dedicated to an unusual subject: traditional Korean medicine.
-
While Jirisan is best known for its towering peaks, scenic hikes and popular K-drama series Mount Jiri (2021), it is also home to over 1,000 endemic herbs which make up a large part of traditional Korean medicinal treatments.
Jirisan’s herbs and plants are used liberally in Donguibogam Village’s restaurants.
Lunch at Yakchowa Beoseotgol (10,000 won, or S$9.40, to 17,000 won a person) is a hearty hotpot filled with medicinal herbs and mushrooms. Norugungdengi, known in South Korea as roe deer butt mushroom for its furry white texture resembling a deer’s tail, is a specialty of the area. And banchan, or side dishes, for dinner at Dongui Yakseongwan include a delicious tempura-style wild ginseng (28,000 to 58,000 won a person).
