Students taking proactive steps to secure their dream jobs

As job opportunities increase across various sectors, graduating students prioritize roles aligning with their passions and career goals, actively seeking competitive advantages to secure their desired positions.

While opportunities are growing in multiple sectors, several soon-to-be graduates interviewed by ST said they are prioritising roles that align with their passions and personal goals. They remain determined to secure jobs in these fields rather than settling for more readily available positions in sectors with more openings.

The students, who will all graduate from university in May 2025, have developed a clear sense of the sectors they hope to pursue, shaped by their experiences in coursework and internships.

Ms Ong Hui Wen, 23, who is studying for a double degree in psychology and finance from NUS, aims to secure an associate psychologist position as her first full-time job.

"The finance field has an abundance of jobs and better pay compared with psychology, but I chose psychology after reflecting on the kind of priorities I want to have as an adult and trying to figure out what is important to me in life," she said.

She believes the role aligns with her personality as it involves being analytical in formulating cases, understanding people and practising empathy in the therapeutic aspects of the job.

Final-year undergraduate Huang Maohan, 26, was initially accepted into the banking and finance course at NTU, but changed his major to maritime studies after realising he was not interested in finance. He wishes to work as a vessel operator in the shipping industry after graduation.
