City Square Mall celebrates sustainability; West Mall embraces communal spaces
E-commerce reigns supreme in retail, but malls are still a vital "third space" in Singapore. Besides shops, malls also house places to eat and have amenities like tuition centres.
Mindful of changing consumer expectations, two shopping destinations in Singapore have in recent months unveiled new and improved versions of themselves.
City Square Mall near Farrer Park MRT station, and West Mall in Bukit Batok, both began asset enhancements in the last three years, with their revamps mostly completed in 2025.
The Straits Times explores what has changed in these malls and how they are keeping up with new retail paradigms.
