An exploration of personal identities through dance

As one stepped into the theatre, a dancer was already on stage, performing a short series of movements.

An exploration of personal identities through dance

The dancer then disappeared, to be replaced almost immediately by another.

This went on as the audience members continued streaming in to take their seats.

Gradually, the dancers began to incorporate spoken sentences into their movement sequences. What was said was related to some aspect of the dancers' roles in life outside of dance.

For example, corporate executives made reference to plans and Zoom meetings, teachers addressed students in a classroom context and a postdoctoral research fellow talked about cells and mitochondria, which drew some laughter from the audience.

In this "pre-show" segment, the dancers were attired in clothes that they would likely be wearing when fulfilling the above-mentioned roles.

It provided much fodder for thinking about identity - highlighting that identities are so often tied to professions, yet the people moving and speaking on stage demonstrated clearly that identities are hybrid and complex.
