Abhishek Banerjee slams BJP over Ranaghat MP’s remarks

A political storm erupted in Bengal on Saturday after BJP’s Ranaghat MP Jagannath Sarkar made a controversial statement claiming that ifthe Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in 2026, the barbed-wire fencing between India and Bangladesh would be removed.
His remark has triggered sharp criticism from the Trinamul Congress (TMC), with its national general secretary and party's second-in-command Abhishek Banerjee accusing the BJP of “betraying the nation” and demanding Sarkar’s immediate expulsion from the party. The controversy began on Friday during a BJP programme at Matiari in Krishnaganj block of Nadia district, where Sarkar told supporters, “If the BJP forms the government in 2026, the barbed wire fence between India and Bangladesh will be removed. Bengal was one once, and it will be one again.” The remark, captured on video, spread rapidly across social media, drawing widespread outrage and political condemnation. Despite the uproar, the BJP has maintained a studied silence for nearly 24 hours, refraining from either endorsing or disowning the MP’s statement.
