Mizoram govt denies capital relocation rumours
The Statesman Siliguri
|August 06, 2025
The Mizoram government has strongly refuted speculation that it is planning to shift the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl in the Serchhip district.
The denial came in response to political uproar triggered by a letter from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which mistakenly suggested a capital relocation—something the state government insists was merely a clerical error.
The controversy was ignited when the Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) claimed that the Centre had acknowledged a proposal to move the capital to Thenzawl, the home constituency of Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
