Protesters allege that authorities made no serious attempt to resolve the issue through dialogue
One and a half month-long peaceful protest by tribals turned violent on Saturday after a demonstrator was fatally run over by a JCB earthmover, leading to clashes with police and multiple injuries on both sides.
The tribals, primarily from Dumerta village, have been opposing the construction of a dedicated railway line connecting Dumerta to the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
Their main demand has been adequate compensation for agricultural land, which they claim continues to be cultivated by displaced locals despite technically belonging to RSP.
Protesters allege that authorities made no serious attempt to resolve the issue through dialogue.
