Rail Utsav celebrates 200 years of modern railways

Rail Utsav 2025, commemorating 200 years of the birth of the modern railways, and 100 years of railway electrification in India, was inaugurated this afternoon at the Calcutta University Institute.
The event was jointly organised by the Rail Enthusiasts' Society in association with the Calcutta University Institute.
A railway book exhibition was inaugurated by Sudhangshu Sekhar Dey, secretary of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild, and S. Pal, president of the Calcutta University Institute. The programme featured sessions on heritage conservation in Indian Railways, the role of railways in Bengali literature, and railway literature in India and abroad. Noted collector and heritage conservationist Debashis Mukherjee spoke on the use of railways in the films of Satyajit Ray.
