Tribals Prepare to Celebrate Makar Festival with Rituals and Cultural Fervor
The Statesman Bhubaneswar
|January 13, 2025
The Makar festival holds special significance for the people of Mayurbhanj, particularly the tribal communities.
Observed from 14 to 16 January, the festival is marked by rituals, traditional delicacies, and vibrant cultural expressions.
At the heart of the celebration are tribal customs that honor nature, tradition, and community. Families begin the day by preparing offerings for the Sun God, including Makar Chaula, a dish made of raw rice, coconut, banana, and sugar, and various types of pithas (rice cakes). Early morning rituals include a river bath, locally called "Kuma," believed to cleanse sins and bring blessings.
