Samajwadi Party president and MP Akhilesh Yadav asserted on Wednesday that social justice and caste census will once again take centre stage in national politics, just as they did decades ago. Speaking in Bhubaneswar, Yadav launched a scathing attack on the BJP and its much-touted "double engine" government model.

"In Uttar Pradesh, the two engines often work at cross-purposes—and now even the bogies are colliding," Yadav quipped. "Ask them which engine is in front and which one at the rear—they'll say the Centre leads while the state follows. But UP, despite electing the Prime Minister three times, receives among the lowest budgetary allocations. It ranks at the bottom or near the bottom on almost every developmental index."

He criticized UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's satisfaction with the state's rankings, saying sarcastically that "at least the state is number one from some end."
