'Saree Weaves' up to reviving Bengal's handloom heritage with each saree telling a story

It's a two-pronged strategy, for sure. On one hand, it carries Bengal's Handloom Legacy into the Digital Age.

- RITWIK MUKHERJEE

But it does not only do that. On the other hand, it connects skilled weavers in West Bengal with conscious shoppers across the country, courtesy Amazon Karigar initiative.

Saree Weaves, a 30-year-old family-run business based in Shantipur (in Nadia district of West Bengal), where every saree tells a story of tradition, is now up to reviving Bengal's weaving heritage, while empowering 35+ artisans with sustained livelihoods and digital access to a wider customer base, all through Amazon Karigar Programme.

Shantipur's weaving heritage is known for its fine cotton, intricate patterns and cultural depth. And in what can be described as a model to replicate with, Saree Weaves' Founder Raju Paul, who grew up around looms, has successfully turned his family's legacy into a purpose-led business that keeps local craftsmanship relevant, providing them with a stable livelihood and a voice in today's fast-moving market.

Shelved Knowledge

Independent India did not consciously ratify Macaulay's contempt; it did something less dramatic and more durable. It allowed the colonial syllabus to survive by inertia. Two centuries on, an Indian school-leaver can recite Newton's three laws and the Krebs cycle, but has rarely been asked, even in passing, to open the Aryabhatiya, the Caraka Samhita or the Arthasastra
