The Congress unit of Baripada on Monday urged the district administration and district police to take action and step up vigil to check the rising instances of theft and crime in the town.

The Congress party's town president Shantanu Pal along with some party workers gave a memorandum to the District Collector Hema Kanta Say through Additional District Magistrate, B B Nayak regarding the deteriorating law and order situation and the increasing influence of criminals in the town.

Pal said that incidents of theft and snatching have been on the rise in the town due to poor security management by the district police.

He said that on Saturday, around 11 AM, a woman near Shitala temple close to the town police station was robbed of gold ornaments from her bag. Similarly, a woman on her way to pick up her child from school was also a victim of snatching. Recently, a gold theft incident was reported from the wife of Gourahari Bishwal in Madhuban, and 9 lakhs worth of gold ornaments were stolen from Kedar Nath's house in Bijayramchandrapur.

There are numerous cases and the police has not been able to nab the culprits, he alleged. Congress Women's Wing president Sushmita Ghoshal and others were present. The CPI District Secretary Jagabandhu Mishra also joined the protest.
