We cannot dismiss the role of BEE

THE ongoing conversation surrounding Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in South Africa has gained new momentum as individuals reflect on the significance of this policy in shaping opportunities for black citizens.

Many black individuals proudly attribute their achievements to personal qualities, such as hard work and intelligence, yet the reality is more nuanced. The critical role of BEE cannot be overlooked in discussions surrounding access, equity, and representation in a historically exclusionary system.

It is a common phenomenon to hear the refrain, "I made it with my APS, my degree, my hard work." But the truth, as hard as it may be for some to accept, is that without BEE, many would have faced insurmountable barriers in their pursuit of success.
