It's a new era for Amakhosi, says goalie Petersen

KAIZER Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen cut an emotional figure after helping the club end a painful 10-year trophy drought with a 2-1 win over fierce rivals Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday afternoon.

Petersen, who was handed a surprise start at Moses Mabhida Stadium, stood tall between the posts to play his part in a victory that ended the club’s long wait for silverware since lifting the 2015 league title.

Goals from Gaston Sirino and captain Yusuf Maart were enough to seal the win, despite Evidence Makgopa’s equaliser for Pirates in the first half.

For Petersen, it wasn’t just about playing in the final - it was about being part of a moment that rewrites the club’s recent history.

“For me, it was a matter of getting a trophy for the club ... whether I played or not. Whenever I found myself on the bench, my role was to give encouragement and motivation (to fellow players),” Petersen said, after the final whistle.
