VALE IN HAT FOR TONIGHT'S FA CUP THIRD ROUND DRAW

PORT

- Phil Sherwin

Vale reached the third round of the Emirates FA Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over League Two side Bristol Rovers thanks to Ben Waine's second goal in successive games. The win earned the Valiants £79,500 in prize money and a place in the potentially lucrative third round draw this evening, which will be broadcast at around 6.40pm on TNT Sports.

Hopefully it will be done a bit quicker than the World Cup draw.

The game survived a morning pitch inspection, but in the end the pitch played fine and true.

Darren Moore kept faith with seven of the side that battered Barnsley 5-0 in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday, the four changes being Ben Heneghan, Funso Ojo, George Hall and Devante Cole, who replaced Jesse Debrah, Dajaune Brown, Rhys Walters and Mo Faal.

Vale almost went in front in the sixth minute. George Hall was fouled 35 yards from goal and Ruari Paton's curling free kick into the box was headed home by Waine, only for the linesman to have his flag raised for offside.

Vale were having most of the early play, and ten minutes later skipper George Byers played a great ball to George Hall, but Luke Southwood raced off his line to clear.
