Danger notice 'driving' proposal to safeguard listed building

- Kerry Ashdown

URGENT work is to be carried out to stabilise a 'dangerous' listed building in a town centre.

Parts of The Maltings in Stone, which is Grade II listed, dates back to the 17th century. It was previously part of Joule's Brewery.

But in more recent years it has been left vacant and has deteriorated, with plants growing out of the walls and a large hole in the roof.

Town councillor and historian Philip Leason raised concerns about its condition in 2018

In April part of Adies Alley, which links Crown Street with the High Street, was closed to pedestrians because of the dangerous condition of The Maltings. A 182-name petition was later submitted to Staffordshire County Council stressing the 'inconvenience' of the closure.

Now Crown Property Services is seeking permission for urgent structural work on The Maltings.
