- Thomas Cooper

'Longton was in his heart'

CHAMPION: Longton trader Richard Cresswell with one of his trophies. Inset, one of his vintage vehicles.

THE family of a businessman at the forefront of Longton's regeneration have paid tribute to him following his death.

Richard Cresswell died peacefully in his sleep on November 9.

Mr Cresswell, who owned RD Cresswell & Co, first moved to Longton aged eight, from a farm in Hankelow.

The 83-year-old was best known for his roles as the president of the Longton Chamber of Trade and the welfare secretary of the Longton Probus Club for more than 20 years.

He got involved in many community projects, including the repainting of Longton's railway bridge and setting up regular beer festivals.

Mr Cresswell, of Hilderstone, leaves Judy, his wife of 60 years, along with sons Stephen, Anthony and David. He also had two granddaughters.
