'I was a baby left on a hospital doorstep - 54 years on I know the truth'

On a freezing November night in 1970 a newborn baby girl was found on the doorstep of the maternity unit at Haywood Hospital, Burslem - left with nothing but a short note.

The baby was adopted, named Tina, and she grew up surrounded by love but always with unanswered questions about her origins. Now 54, she turned to a TV programme in hope modern science might shed light on the mystery of her past

"I would have been cold in November, I mean, what would have happened if they didn’t open that door?" asks Tina as she appeared on ITV's Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace.

"Maybe she was 16, 17, she lost a job, she didn't have any money. But with no support... because if you had support, you wouldn't do that."

Generally, when children are placed for adoption, there are records of the birth parents and their circumstances. All Tina has is a Sentinel report with the content of the note that she was left with: "Please take care of my baby. She is a lovely baby, and I have been turned out of my lodgings because of her. I shall come back for her when I have somewhere to live."

But nobody ever did return. She was adopted by David and Elaine, who named her Tina, and raised her just a few miles from where she'd been found. Tina had a lovely childhood, although as an only child she wished she had brothers and sisters.
