Car park overhaul after OAP died following 'speed bump fall'

A COUNCIL has been accused of lacking transparency over the death of a pensioner who fell over a speed bump in a car park.

Eighty-nine-year-old Elizabeth Bury died due to 'complications following a fall' in Tape Street car park, inset right, in Cheadle in February 2024.

Assistant coroner Emma Serrano, who conducted an inquest into the death, subsequently sent a report to car park owner Staffordshire Moorlands District Council calling for action to be taken.

In her September 2024 report she said the car park had been 'the source of many falls because of the speed bumps' and that the council should act 'to prevent future deaths'.

SMDC recently carried out an overhaul of Tape Street car park, including the replacement of speed bumps and the installation of new signs and crossing points.

But opposition Conservative councillor James Aberley believes the council should have been more open about the reasons for the works.
