Israel's attacks on Iran could trigger a catastrophic full-scale war, further destabilizing an already volatile Middle East and posing serious risks to global security, says Asad Mirza

ISRAEL'S June 13 airstrikes on Iranian soil marked a sharp escalation in the long-running rivalry between the two nations.
Codenamed Operation Rising Lion, the Israeli operation involved dozens of fighter jets targeting Iran's nuclear facilities, missile factories, and military leaders. Explosions were reported in Tehran and at the Natanz uranium enrichment site.
"We are at a decisive moment in Israel's history," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a video address. Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, declared a 'special situation,' and military sources confirmed attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. According to Israel's Channel 12, Iran's Armed Forces Chief Mohammad Bagheri and senior nuclear scientists may have been killed, though Iran has not officially confirmed the casualties.
The airstrikes followed months of rising tensions, with Israeli officials citing intelligence that Iran had stockpiled enough enriched uranium to produce multiple nuclear weapons. A senior Israeli military official told Reuters that Iran could build up to 15 bombs in a matter of days. Israeli leaders framed the strikes as a necessary step to prevent an existential threat, given the lack of progress in diplomatic talks.
Tehran denies any intention to develop nuclear weapons but asserts its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, such as nuclear fuel production. Just days before the attack, Iran claimed it had acquired a trove of secret documents detailing Israel's undeclared nuclear arsenal.
The timing of the attack also coincided with the collapse of US-Iran nuclear talks. A crucial meeting scheduled for June 15 in Oman was on the brink of failure before the strikes, leaving its future uncertain.
