Making it to the 2027 FIBA World Cup won't be easy for the Philippines and from all indications, the fight for the last Asian ticket could be between Gilas and Iran.
There are six home-and-away windows set for the FIBA World Cup Asia qualifiers starting in November and ending in March 2027.
Of 16 contenders, eight will advance to the World Cup in Qatar on Aug. 27-Sept. 12, 2027. Host Qatar is guaranteed a slot. The other seven are the top three teams in two second-round groups and the best-placed fourth placer, decided by the quotient system.
The Philippines is in a tough situation. It's in Group A with Australia, New Zealand, and Guam. The top three will move to the second round to join the top three in Group C, which consists of Iran, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq.
The expectation is Gilas will take one of three slots from Group A with Guam likely to be eliminated. Still, Guam can't be counted out.
