No need to declare net zero commitment – Garin

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin has dismissed the need for a formal net zero promise, asserting that the Philippines’ bold energy transition targets already go beyond symbolic commitments.

“We do not need to commit to other countries what we want to do for our country. We decide ourselves what our targets are,” Garin said yesterday on the sidelines of the 2025 Philippine Net Zero Conference.

Although it remains the only country in Southeast Asia without a net zero target, the Philippines commits to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent over the next five years.

But even without a national declaration, Garin said the Philippines is anchoring its climate ambitions on the energy transition plan aimed at rolling out more clean power sources.

“We do have our own targets as far as energy is concerned,” she said.
