LPA Monitored Inside PAR, Looms as 1st Cyclone of 2025

A low-pressure area (LPA) within the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration reported yesterday.

PAGASA reported that as of 3 p.m., the weather disturbance was located approximately 340 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes.

Although the LPA is not expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone immediately, its development potential remains under close monitoring, particularly beyond the 24-hour forecast window.

The LPA, together with the prevailing southwest monsoon, is bringing rains over large portions of the country. Cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms are affecting Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region and the Zamboanga Peninsula.

These conditions may lead to flash floods and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas.

Meanwhile, rainfall in Quezon province, the Bicol Region and the rest of Visayas and Mindanao is being caused by the trough of the LPA.
