HSBC Philippines: 150 years of empowering people and shaping futures
The Philippine Star
|July 04, 2025
HSBC Philippines is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, a significant milestone that underscores its enduring commitment to its people—the driving force behind its continued success.
For 150 years, HSBC Philippines has not only played a vital role in the nation's economic growth but has also consistently prioritized its employees, fostering a culture of growth, inclusion, and well-being.
A LEGACY OF EMPOWERMENT: FROM MANILA TO GLOBAL REACH HSBC's journey in the Philippines began in 1875 with the opening of its first branch in Manila, supporting international trade. This early commitment to facilitating commerce laid the foundation for its enduring success. The bank's expansion beyond Manila in 1883, with the establishment of a branch in Iloilo, further solidified its presence and its role in supporting the growth of the sugar industry and regional commerce.
Through periods of significant historical change—including the American era and the aftermath of World War II—HSBC remained a steadfast presence, consistently demonstrating its commitment to the Philippine economy and its people.
As Lani Biacora, formerly Head of Global Trade Solutions (GTS)—Business Development at HSBC Philippines, and now head of GTS Business Management at HSBC Singapore, eloquently states, "HSBC's purpose is opening up a world of opportunity. And for me, opportunities are not only meant for our customers or stakeholders but also for us, as employees."
"It means opportunities to learn new skills, to work with a different group of people, and to learn more about different cultures. This is made possible because of our vast network and international connectivity."
Biacora's sentiment perfectly encapsulates the essence of HSBC Philippines' employee value proposition. The bank's commitment to fostering a culture of opportunity is evident in its various initiatives, from its well-designed local capability-building programs to its regional and global talent development programs.
