A famous first victory in 64 years against a Euro opponent ultimately served as springboard for Gilas Pilipinas' semifinal march in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia.
The 37th-ranked Nationals touched off their ambitious drive to the Paris Olympics with a massive 89-80 upset of the world No. 6 Latvians in their own backyard early yesterday that sent shockwaves as far as 9,000 kilometers away in Manila.
Coach Tim Cone and his brave 11 masterfully executed their triangle offense and defensive schemes to get the stunned Latvians on the ropes for the whole of 40 minutes en route to the rousing debut in Group A.
The gigantic upset enabled the Philippines to finally put one against a rival from Europe after a long drought that dated back to 1960 Olympiad in Rome, where the Pinoy dribblers defeated Spain, 84-84.
President Marcos hailed Gilas' victory and encouraged the team to gun for the Paris Olympics.
