The Department of Education owes P3 billion in arrears to the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara revealed.

“The arrears represent many years of non-remittance,” Angara said during a recent Senate finance committee hearing chaired by Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian.

He disclosed that when he assumed office, the total arrears stood at P7 billion, but reconciliations with GSIS reduced the amount to P3 billion.

Angara urged the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and Congress to help settle the obligation amid complaints from teachers and principals unable to access their benefits.

He said the agency needs budgetary assistance to fully pay the remaining balance, which accumulated over more than a decade.
