BARMM polls may be postponed anew

The first-ever parliamentary election in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is unlikely to proceed as scheduled on Oct. 13, according to the Commission on Elections.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia yesterday said the poll body is considering postponing the BARMM elections again based on the recommendations of the Comelec’s law department and project management office.

“The Comelec will meet based on what was discussed here, because the law department and the project management office recommended to postpone the election,” Garcia said. “If there are factors that could hinder a smooth, peaceful and credible election, it would be better for the Comelec to invoke it (postponement). It’s in the law, there’s a remedy... why wouldn’t the Comelec use it? That's what we'll do.”
