What's on telly? A trip to the cinema for the season finale
The Observer
|May 11, 2025
Fans will queue up and spoilers will be banned. But the cinemagoers who arrive at their local screens at the end of the month will be there to watch the latest episode of Doctor Who, not the next Marvel film.
Despite the ubiquity of streaming, the entertainment industry is betting on a growing future audience for television shows on the big screen.
Event screenings of drama season premieres and finales are a key growth area, with the BBC's forthcoming two-part finale of Ncuti Gatwa's second series as the Doctor released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 31 May.
"Doctor Who is doing really well - so we've had to increase screenings to meet demand," said Johnny Carr, head of event cinema and distribution at Vue International.
Episodes of Game of Thrones, Broadchurch, Sherlock, The Walking Dead, Friends, The Office and Doctor Who have all drawn big crowds in Britain and the US.
