Nilgiri Tahr survey to focus on genetic exchange between small populations

THE three-day synchronised survey of Nilgiri Tahr in the Tamil Nadu and Kerala Tahr habitat divisions commenced on Monday.
The survey focuses on identifying small isolated populations living in fragmented areas and the genetic exchange between them.
A total of 140 teams took part in the process on the first day and one of the teams spotted 24 Nilgiri Tahrs, including 19 females and two saddleback males, one each of brown back male, at Winch Varaiyattu Mottai, Valukku Parai beat in Upper Kothaiyar Range of Kalakkad Division, said officials of Project Nilgiri Tahr.
