The Andhra Pradesh government reiterated that the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme, proposed on the Krishna river, is not a new project. The project is designed to add an additional pumping component to the existing gravity system when the water level drops below 841 feet, making gravity-based water drawal impossible. This ensures the minimum water supply for essential needs such as the Chennai Water Supply (15 tmcft) and drinking water for the drought-prone Rayalaseema region. Officials emphasized that this is only a supplementary scheme for the allocated water to Andhra Pradesh.
