A 25-year-old man was arrested by Vathalai police on Tuesday for attacking the former panchayat president of Gunaseelam with a machete over an alleged extra-marital relationship and land dispute involving his female relative.

The suspect, V Shanmugavel from Kallur village, was arrested in connection with the assault on Sathyanarayanan (50), former president of Gunaseelam Panchayat. The incident took place on Monday on the Namakkal-Tiruchy road near Kiliyanallur.
