Copra supply runs dry, coconut oil price goes high; traders feel heat

Coconut oil prices rose to ₹460 from ₹230/litre in a year; copra from ₹147/kg in 2018 to ₹250
The continuous rise in copra prices has pushed up the cost of wood-pressed coconut oil from ₹230 to ₹460 per litre in the last year. Currently, the price of a litre of coconut oil is more than that of gingelly oil, and sales have taken a deep hit.
Sources said the price of copra continues to rise. In 2018, the price of copra rose to ₹147 per kg. Now, it has nearly doubled to ₹250 per kg. On Wednesday, in Modakurichi, a kg of first-grade copra was priced at ₹250.99, and the price of coconut was ₹72.69 per kg, leading to a sharp increase in oil prices.
