FORMER chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi has raised concerns over the sincerity of the Union government's 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, suggesting that it could undermine the federal structure outlined in the Constitution.
Speaking at the CJS Memorial gathering held at Kerala Sahitya Akademi on Monday, Quraishi addressed the topic, "One Nation, One Election - A Nightmare for India's Federal Policy." He criticised the government's justification for implementing the system, calling it insincere. "One of the arguments put forward is the cost of conducting elections in phases. According to recent reports, the total cost of elections in India is around ₹4,500 crore. For a country like India, the 5th largest economy in the world, this is not a significant amount for carrying out a major democr
