Nor'wester damage: Farmers seek relief norm revision

FACING widespread crop damage caused by the recent nor'wester in the district, farmers of Bargarh on Wednesday demanded a revision of the compensation criteria and improved insurance coverage.
Addressing mediapersons here, farmers under the banner of Sanjukta Krushak Sangathan said the current compensation provided by the government doesn't reflect the actual production rate, given the district's usual paddy yield. "While Bargarh is known for its high paddy yield of 32-35 quintal per acre, the government's compensation norm only considers a production rate of 21 quintal per acre. As a result, farmers cannot claim the compensation unless crop loss exceeds 33 per cent," they said.
