ISRO stresses on safe practices to mitigate space debris

WITH deployment of a large constellation of active satellites in the coming years and the issue of impending space debris looming, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) embarked on zero-debris space missions in future in keeping with Space Traffic Management Safety (STMS) norms.

This was one of the ways forward listed by ISRO in its Indian Space Situational Assessment Report 2024, released by ISRO Chairman V Narayanan recently. The outcome of the report was released by ISRO on Thursday.

In the report compiled by ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM), the team noted that there is an increase in space congestion, especially in the Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) because of the close approach alerts. It also noted that space traffic is not going to slow down because of easy access through ridershare and technological advances, mass production, miniaturisation and multifaceted applications.
