AS the state government has decided to take steps to assess the feasibility of Mangalore-Udupi-Manipal, a 64-km metro rail connectivity corridor to enhance regional connectivity, the proposal, which is at its nascent stage now, sparked diverse opinions among the stakeholders regarding its feasibility and economic viability.
Metro rail connectivity is envisioned as a long-term solution to the increasing vehicular traffic between Mangaluru and Udupi, and as a sustainable alternative. Critics of this proposal who spoke to The New Indian Express questioned its economic viability given the region's population density and travel demand, but those who welcomed the idea, told TNIE that it would promote sustainable urban mobility.
