PM says governance is about ensuring access to all; Foreign secy says aim to ensure greatest good for greatest number

- JAYANTH JACOB @ New Delhi

AS the global AI Action Summit shifts from safety in 2023 to action in 2025, India aims to balance the global governance framework by making it inclusive, sustainable, and mindful of the needs of Global South countries.

India has been part of all the five working groups dealing with international governance, future of work, security and safety, artificial intelligence for general interest, and innovation and culture in the run-up to the summit that France co-chaired with India. Though there are differences among the countries, especially from the US and UK, efforts are still on to get an outcome statement during the summit.

As geopolitics play its part in the shaping of AI governance structure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi placed premium on both inclusivity and sustainability, hoping that such an approach will be good for as it would foster innovation and benefit maximum countries across the globe.

WHEN A CLEAN-UP BECOMES A MESS

A year ago, the idea of a massive nationwide exercise to visit every single household to verify, add, or delete voters was not on anyone’s radar. After all, the Narendra Modi government did not even conduct the mandatory dec-adal census. Chief Election Commi sioner Gyanesh Kumar took charge in February 2025 and, for three months, did not utter the term ‘special intensive revision’ (SIR). Suddenly, one day in June, the CEC announced a nationwide SIR beginning with Bihar. Why so suddenly and so hastily?
