City struggles to tackle construction waste amid rapid urbanization, artificial flooding

Households have no option but to dump their C&D waste by roadside or into stormwater drains
MANGALURU'S rapid urbanization is under scrutiny as the city faces severe flooding during the recent heavy rain, with one of the major culprits being the unchecked dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste into stormwater drains, low-lying areas and riversides.
This chaotic disposal points to a deeper issue: the city's inability to manage the increasing volume of construction waste, amid its booming real estate development. Despite a state policy mandating that by December 2027, at least 50% of C&D waste must be recycled or reused in urban areas, Mangaluru seems to be lagging behind, with no visible steps taken in the district to implement these guidelines.
