Rights panel steps in after media reports highlighted couple's ordeal

Thamarassery police are facing an internal probe following serious allegations from a couple who alleged that they were assaulted by a gang and subsequently pressured by police officers to drop the case.

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter, ordering a probe after media reports highlighted the couple's ordeal.

The incident occurred last Saturday night when the couple, who run a business in Bengaluru, were travelling by car with their two-year-old son. They alleged that their vehicle was forcibly stopped by a three-member gang following a dispute over the use of the car's headlights.

The couple claimed that the gang then proceeded to assault them in front of their terrified toddler. Seeking justice, the couple filed a complaint with the Thamarassery police station, but what followed, they allege, was not protection but persecution.
