Dairy Farmers Struggle as Heatwave Reduces Milk Yield, Increases Costs

DAIRY farmers across the state are grappling with a severe crisis as milk production declines and operational costs soar.

- Varsha Somaraj @T'Puram

The scorching summer heat has led to a significant drop in milk yield, while the prices of cattle feed and hay have surged.

Farmers say they are struggling to make ends meet as the price they receive for milk remains low despite the rising cost of production.

Cows typically produce less milk during summer due to heat stress. As their body temperature rises, they eat less, leading to reduced nutrient intake. This directly impacts milk yield, making it increasingly difficult for farmers to maintain profitability. Additionally, extreme heat has caused a scarcity of green fodder, exacerbating financial challenges.
