CRFM starts late, Sundargarh farmers race against time to stick to schedule

THE rain-fed Sundargarh district has belatedly started implementation of the Comprehensive Project on Rice Fallow Management (CRFM) scheme which envisages to enhance soil health, increase cropping intensity and boost farmers' income by allowing them to go for a second crop after harvesting of paddy.
It has been targeted to cover 23,500 hectare (ha) of land with cultivation of pulses and oilseeds in the ongoing rabi season under the scheme. Last year, the CRFM programme for rabi season started in mid-October. Due to the delayed start this year, the beneficiary farmers are racing against time to sow mustard, chickpea and lentil seeds by mid-December, which is the most ideal time for cultivation of these crops.
