ALL 20 living Israeli hostages held by Hamas and 1,968 Palestinian prisoners in Israel's custody were released on Monday as part of a landmark ceasefire agreement that has raised hopes of ending the two-year-old Gaza war.
In Tel Aviv, Israelis erupted in cheers as hostages were confirmed free, while Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza greeted buses of released prisoners with celebrations, AP reported.
Under the deal, Hamas is also due to return the bodies of 27 hostages who died or were killed in captivity. The Israeli military said on Monday night that the bodies of two deceased hostages were also handed over to the Red Cross.
Speaking to Israeli lawmakers, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was "committed to this peace," signalling the war that began when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, could finally be ending.
