Despite poverty, Sukri kept her community's rich tradition alive

SUKRI Bommagowda, fondly called Sukrajji, was just 16 years old when she lost her husband. Her community members urged her to remarry, but Sukri gave the example of a jungle bird that mates for life. She decided to remain single and dedicate herself to working for her community.

Despite her poverty, she preserved the rich traditions of the Halakki community throughout the ups and downs of her life. Even today, many villages in Ankola taluk have no liquor outlets, thanks to the social movement led by Sukrajji.
