DEHRADUN has been battered by a historic deluge, recording its highest rainfall in 74 years within a 24-hour period, leading to widespread disruption and pushing major rivers above danger levels.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts as the state braces for further heavy downpours.

According to the State Meteorological Department, the capital witnessed 175 mm of rain, while nearby Haripur recorded an even higher 177 mm.

This marks the third instance this season of over 175 mm of rainfall in a single day.

The previous all-time 24-hour record for Dehradun was a staggering 332.2mm, set way back in 1951.
