JAMMU and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sparked political controversy on Friday by opposing the flow of water from the three rivers of the Indus system to Punjab, reminding the neighbouring state of how it had "maltreated" J&K in the past.

- HARPREET BAJWA @Chandigarh

Reacting to Abdullah's statement that "we will not give water from the Indus River to Punjab," the state's main political parties, Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal, charged him with politicising the water issue.

They dropped the ball in the Centre's court, arguing that since it had put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance after the Pahalgam attack, it should take responsibility for appropriately distributing the remaining water and give Punjab its rightful share.

AAP Punjab spokesperson Neel Garg reminded Abdullah he cannot take a unilateral decision on this matter.
