US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on Saturday for protecting civilians in the Gaza Strip in what was seen as a tacit approval for the Israeli ground assault. An Israeli ground assault would worsen the plight of civilians in Gaza who are without power, fresh water or access to aid.
Israel has called up some 3,60,000 military reserves and massed troops and tanks along the border with Gaza. A ground assault in Gaza would likely bring even higher casualties on both sides.
